<\/del>Forest Runners Come to a Grizzly End<\/span><\/h2>\n

Twelve Forest of Dean runners took part in the annual \u2018Grizzly\u2019 race on Sunday the 12<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> of March, a race which takes place around Seaton in Devon each year and is known for being one of the toughest twenty mile races in the country.<\/span> It involves running along a shingle beach, through bogs and includes over 1000 meters climbing in the local hills. The race attracted over 1800 runners this year with entrants coming from throughout Europe and as far away as the United States.<\/span>  <\/span>53 runners travelled from the Netherlands possibly to enjoy the experience of running on hills.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

All twelve FODAC runners completed the course, no mean feat in itself, with Julian Boon the first Forest runner home squeezing in just under the three hours in 2:58:16. He was followed by Daren Smith in 3:07:44 and then Michael Marks in 3:27:55.  Julian took 11th<\/sup> place out of 176 in his class placing him in the top 5% of the group. In addition Chris Moore took 5th<\/sup> place out of 35 in the M60 class with 3:45:10 while Chris Hawkins ran particularly well, taking 2nd<\/sup> place out of 13 in the M65 class with a time of 3:55:05<\/span><\/p>\n

First FODAC woman home was Helen Lipscomb in 3:45:10 followed by Kate Burke in 3:55:05 with Gemma Hewitt and Jo Edwards crossing the line together in 4:23:30.  Gemma had completed the 45 mile Green Man circumnavigation of Bristol the weekend before and took on one of the toughest UK races when most of us would have been resting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mark Channer and Karen Barnett also managed to complete the course, in Karen\u2019s case, despite a heavy fall on route.<\/span><\/p>\n

Forest of Dean Spring Half Marathon<\/span><\/h2>\n

An record 54 FODAC athletes joined a total of 2253 runners in the Forest of Dean Spring Half Marathon this Sunday with some taking top positions at the finish line.<\/span>  Included among the star performers this year were Mother and son duo, Catherine Roberts and Alex Lindfield with Catherine taking the prize for first woman forester home with a finish time of 1:37:14 while not to be outdone, Alex took the prize for first male forester home with a very impressive of time of 1:18:36. Catherine finished 2nd<\/sup> in the F45 category out of 143 a mere 6 <\/span>\u00bd<\/span> seconds behind the first placed finisher Lou Summers of Pontypool District AC while Alex took 5th<\/sup> place overall in the race and 4th<\/sup> place in the men\u2019s senior class out of 508 placing him well within the top 1% for his age group.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2nd<\/sup> male FODAC runner back was Steven Richards with a time of 1:23:35 which placed him 6th<\/sup> out of 423 in the MV40 class while John Hamilton took 25th<\/sup> place in the overall race with a time of 1:23:58.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2nd<\/sup> female FODAC runner was Melinda Ruck in 1:43:43 which placed her in 5th<\/sup> position among the 143 in the F45 class while Martha Hamilton finished in a very credible 1:45:12.<\/span><\/p>\n

Three further FODAC men: Dan Sandford, Julian Boon and Andy Raynor all came in well under the one and a half hour barrier with 1:23:32, 1:27:59 and 1:29:19 respectively while Mick Strange put in a fine performance to take 1st<\/sup> place out of 70 in the MV60 class with a time of 1:32:01 while Jacqui Wynds took 2nd<\/sup> place out of 32 in the FV60 class with 1:51:20<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
